PDF Dark Mode

Dark mode for scanned PDFs

Scans are photos, not text — so they need softer settings than born-digital PDFs.

Recommended settings

  1. Set Darkness to 225–240 (not max 255).
  2. Set Contrast to 105–115% until glyph edges sharpen without harsh backgrounds.
  3. For evening sessions, switch to Sepia (Pro) — warmer and more forgiving on gray scan backgrounds.

When the overlay is not enough

Chrome's built-in viewer renders some PDFs where the overlay cannot reach. Open those from the extension popup in the experimental full-dark viewer (beta), which re-renders pages genuinely dark instead of overlaying them.

Quick checklist

Try it: open your scan in the free web reader (files stay on-device) or install the Chrome / Edge extension. Also: Chrome guide, arXiv workflow.
