PDF Dark Mode

Read arXiv PDFs in dark mode

A night-reading workflow for papers, not a single on/off switch.

The 3-step workflow

  1. Install Chrome or Edge extension and open any arxiv.org/pdf/… link.
  2. Toggle with Ctrl+Shift+1 (Mac: Cmd+Shift+1). Set Darkness to 255 and Contrast to 100% as a baseline.
  3. Pro: save an always-on rule for arxiv.org so every paper opens dark automatically.

Long sessions

For 90-minute-plus reading, switch to Sepia (Pro) — a warm wash over the inversion that most readers find less harsh than gray. On OLED laptops, AMOLED (Pro) drops brightness further with true blacks.

Figures and equations

Vector figures and math stay crisp. Scanned plots may need Darkness 225–240 + Contrast 105–115%. If a specific viewer renders badly, exclude its hostname with a per-site rule (Pro) instead of turning the whole extension off.

Try it on your next paper: install the extension or drop the PDF into the free web reader (files never leave your device). Also: Chrome guide, scanned PDFs.
